Trump's debate win: Why Trump won big with his base and with right wing groups like the Proud Boys -
Mr. Trump demurred and then said, “Proud Boys — stand back and stand by.” Within minutes, members of the group were posting in private social media channels, calling the president’s comments “historic.” In one channel dedicated to the Proud Boys on Telegram, a private messaging app, group members called the president’s comment a tacit endorsement of their violent tactics. In another message, a member commented that the group was already seeing a spike in “new recruits.” Click on the image to read more from The New York Times
Social media, particularly Facebook, is full of posts defending Donald Trump’s performance. Donald Trump clearly won this debate with his base, and his base will stand steadfastly behind him. He is going into this now ongoing election with a solid base that continues to support him despite his failure to condemn racism, his call to action to violent right wing groups (“stand back and stand ready”), and his baseless attack on election credibility suggesting that his supporters should be ready to call the election a fraud.
Our point is best illustrated by the following from Facebook (of which there are many). The quotes are posted exactly as written on Facebook after the first Biden/Trump debate:
“My opinion on the debate tonight:
We have come to a crossroads in American presidential politics. If we vote for Donald Trump we will live in a society led by a man who refuses to condemn racism, who believes, without evidence, that the election system that put him into office with millions of mail in ballots, is a fraud, who is unwilling to condemn right wing racist groups asking them to “stand down”, who distorts the truth, and who is willing to lie to fool his base. If elected, Donald Trump will represent the decline of the great American experiment taking it into an irreversible path to oblivion.
This election is that important. This debate showed America the extent to which Donald Trump will go to stay in power.
We are in trouble because too many are just willing to blindly accept what Trump has to say because they have fallen victim to the propaganda designed to fool them.
Trump won the debate, but it does not mean he will win the election because, hopefully, a majority of voting America sees the danger of Donald Trump.
