Oh what politicians will do to justify their actions when they know they are wrong. Moreover, some politicians believe their judgment is better than the judgment of the American people. Therefore, they know best.
Consider the following from Mitt Romney:
"Romney said that he prefers Supreme Court justices who are 'strict constructionists.' The senator said this means justices who 'look at the law itself and the Constitution, as opposed to sort of looking into the sky and pulling out ideas that they think may be more appropriate than the law or the Constitution.'"
Translation: Romney wants conservative activist judges who view things from the right, pull out ideas from the sky to support the extreme right, thereby interpreting the constitution based upon conservative right wing views to fit in with Romney's and the GOP's view of the law. After all, we know better.
Then there is this…
"I recognize that we may have a court which has more of a conservative bent than it's had over the last few decades," he said. "But my liberal friends have over many decades gotten very used to the idea of having a liberal court. And that's not written in the stars."
Although Romney said he understands that many Americans don't want the court to become more conservative, he argued it would be appropriate for the country.
Translation: It is better to push our conservative judgment over that of the American people…after all we know better. Who cares what the American people think?
Romney goes on with his egotistical condescending remarks.
"It's also appropriate for a nation—which is, if you will, center right—to have a court which reflects center-right points of view, which again are not changing the law from what it states but instead following the law and following the Constitution," the senator said.
Translation: You may want moderate judges, maybe even moderates who lean slightly to the left or the right? But what do you know, conservative is better. Go beyond moderate, go conservative. After all, I am smarter than you and it is my judgment that counts, not yours.
Here is the bottom line, this is about changing society to make it more conservative, extremely conservative through the appointment of conservative judges who serve life terms. Romney, and his GOP colleagues in the Senate, care about their careers and their views more than those of the people who live in this nation.
